If you think all police men are terrible people, well, many Nigerians don’t think so. At least, not those who has encountered Sp. Rabiu Garba.
Recall that Nigerian youths took to the streets all over the country and even beyond to protest against police brutality and bad governance. The social media was not left out as the hashtag #endsars gathered much more tweets not only from Nigeria but from international individuals, organisations and world leaders.
Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter also gave voice to the protest and was actively retweeting tweets that supported the movement. He has also encouraged donations.
After the killing of protesters at Lekki by the Nigerian Army, hoodlums and angry youths have taken to the streets to destroy properties and burn police stations.
While most Nigerians agree that police brutality has been a problem in many parts of the country, many Nigerians also agree that there are good men in the Police. This is something that even hoodlums have agreed to.
A Nigerian man, Daniel Obiora has taken to Facebook to share a story of an encounter with Sp Rabiu Garba and why his police station was not torched by angry mobs in Fegge unlike other places. Below is his story:
“January 10, 2018, After spending my Xmas holidays, I drove in to greet the DPO who was transferred from the Villa to Onitsha as punishment as I was not happy with the way he was posted out with an ORDER to report in 24 hours, he left Abuja next day as he must obey.
As soon I drove in, I was well received and in 10 minutes, there was snacks from Mr Biggs, while I was eating my snacks, he requested for my car key to send someone an errand, I gave him the key, when Ī was leaving, I saw that the police at the station put yam in my booth for my family, I got into the car and discovered that my tank has been filled up and I also heard Oga Dan take in-case you need to buy fuel till you get back to Abuja, hmmmmmmm!!!!! .
As I wanted to drive out, someone was brought in wounded by Okada rider and was bleeding, Sp. RABIU GARBA then called the Inspector crime, he said, please take this man to the hospital, he gave the wounded man #5000 from his pocket, if the doctor needs more money please call me and gave his number to the wounded man.
Months later, he was transferred to Area Command still as part of the intimidation to stop him, soon after that he was transferred to a remote village, Rabiu you are becoming too popular and an average Anambra man will always bless good works, they transferred him again and again, but when God decides to lift you up even if you are in a hole, he will still do what he wants to do.
Promoted to CSP and now the DPO of FEGGE police ONITSHA where everything happens, the hub of Hausa/Yoruba/Tiv and other tribes, every uproar at Onitsha starts with FEGGE but since he resumed as DPO, there had not been any crisis, he built a borehole for the FEGGE community with his money, you will hear of others very soon.
#Endsars protest was hijacked by miscreants and were on their way to the police station, every other police officer ran away except CSP. Rabiu Garba, they came with fuel, cutlaßes and other dangerous weapons to kill and to Destroy the police station like they have done in other places but as they were coming, they saw the DPO and the story changed to we want Garba.
Even in heaven, I know that he will be highly celebrated, I cry as I write this knowing that one day police officer like him will be made the Inspector General of police.
I will continue to celebrate him, join me”
Daniel’s story further proves that Nigeria can thrive together regardless of our diversity.
