After initially denying being involved, labelling the news as fake and announcing that the videos which have now gone viral were photoshop, the Army has finally admitted that they were involved in the killing of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.
Recall that the Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu said it was forces beyond his direct control while trying not to mention the army. He was later to admit to CNN during a live interview that it was indeed the army.
The army didn’t admit at that time of Sanwo-Olu’s interview with CNN until Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria announced that they have identified the barracks where the soldiers came from.
In another twist, the army, while admitting involvement had implicated the Governor of Lagos State by saying that they only carried out operations at the Lekki Toll Gate on the request of the Governor which was meant to restore order.
In a previous interview with Arise News, Jide Sanwo-Olu, in a visible struggle to alienate himself from the massacre, had maintained that he doesn’t know how the Army function and shouldn’t be held responsible.
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has remained mute on the Lekki massacre even during his supposed live broadcast.
The big question remains “who authorized the Nigerian army to shoot peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll-Gate”, will Sanwo-Olu, the Nigerian Army and the President keep running around this subject in denial or will they own up to it and face the consequences?
